Why Lagos traffic is harder on your car than the open road

Two vehicles with identical mileage can be years apart in condition. The difference is usually not distance travelled, but how that distance was spent.

We routinely see two cars of the same model and similar mileage present in completely different condition. One has spent its life running between Lagos and Ibadan at a steady cruise. The other has covered the same distance in Ikeja, Lekki, and the Third Mainland approach at an average speed you could match on a bicycle. Mechanically, they have led entirely different lives.

Manufacturer service intervals are calculated against an assumed duty cycle, and that assumption looks nothing like dense urban traffic. Most schedules include a severe-use column that many owners never see, and heavy stop-start driving sits firmly in it.

Heat without airflow

An engine at a standstill is producing heat with almost no natural airflow to remove it. Cooling shifts entirely onto the fans, the condenser is fighting radiant heat from the road as well as the engine, and the air conditioning system is working hardest at exactly the moment it has least help. Coolant, transmission fluid, and power steering fluid all run hotter for longer than they would at speed.

Heat is the primary enemy of every fluid in the car. Oxidation accelerates, additive packages deplete, and seals harden. This is why an urban-use vehicle can show fluid degradation that looks premature against the odometer but is entirely consistent with the hours those fluids spent hot.

The short-journey problem

A second and less obvious cost is the journey that never gets warm. Combustion produces water, and until the oil reaches full operating temperature that water does not evaporate out of the sump. It sits there, mixes with combustion by-products, and forms mildly acidic sludge.

Repeated short trips also leave fuel dilution in the oil, prevent the exhaust system from reaching the temperature it needs to stay clean, and on a diesel vehicle interrupt the regeneration cycle the particulate filter depends on. A car used exclusively for eight-minute journeys is a car that never completes its own housekeeping.

  • Oil that never fully warms retains moisture and fuel, which shortens its useful life well before the mileage interval arrives.
  • Battery charge acceptance suffers, because a short drive rarely replaces what starting and idling consumed.
  • Diesel particulate filters accumulate soot without the sustained load needed to burn it off, leading to forced regenerations and eventually a blocked filter.
  • Brake discs stay damp and develop surface corrosion that the pads then have to clean off, which accelerates pad wear.

Brakes, bushes, and steering

Stop-start driving multiplies brake applications enormously. What matters is not the severity of each stop but their number: a light pedal press repeated four hundred times in a morning generates more pad wear and more heat cycling than a handful of firm stops on a highway run. Front pads on an urban car frequently need attention at half the mileage we would expect from the same model used for longer journeys.

Suspension bushes and mounts wear from a different mechanism. Slow travel over uneven surfaces, kerbs, and drainage crossings loads them repeatedly at low speed and high articulation, which is precisely the condition rubber components tolerate least. Steering components see the same effect from constant low-speed manoeuvring, often with the wheel held at full lock while stationary, which is the hardest thing you can ask of a power steering system.

Mileage tells us how far a car has travelled. The wear pattern tells us how it travelled, and that is the part we actually service.

Adjusting the plan

None of this argues against using a premium car in the city. It argues for servicing it against its real duty cycle rather than an assumed one. In practice, that means a small number of sensible adjustments.

  • Shorten oil intervals for predominantly urban use, and treat the severe-use column in the handbook as the default rather than the exception.
  • Inspect brakes by wear measurement at every visit rather than waiting for a mileage trigger or a warning.
  • Include transmission and cooling system condition in the conversation earlier than the schedule suggests, because both live in the heat.
  • Give a diesel vehicle a sustained run at load periodically, or accept that the particulate filter will need workshop intervention.
  • Have suspension and steering components checked as a set, since urban wear tends to arrive across a group rather than in one part.

When we build a care plan, we ask how the car is actually used before we look at the odometer. A vehicle doing twelve thousand kilometres a year almost entirely in traffic needs a different calendar from one doing thirty thousand on the highway, and pretending otherwise is how well-maintained cars still end up with premature failures.

The reassuring part is that urban wear is predictable. It arrives in the same places, in the same order, on almost every vehicle we see. Predictable wear is the easiest kind to stay ahead of.
